In session with me, you can expect to have an intelligent conversation where you are treated with respect and dignity.
I believe that the work of therapy is a sacred privilege. In no other profession do clients offer us such a uniquely personal window into their lives. The essence of the therapy I offer is therefore rooted in empathy. That is, I first seek to understand exactly how it is that the problems you bring to therapy actually make sense in terms of the relational and sociocultural systems that contextualize your life—as I believe that only then do I have the privilege of helping you move to a different spot. Then, we will explore how to introduce some kind of change into your situation, so that you aren’t stuck continuing to make efforts that aren’t helpful to you.
I customize a unique blend of therapeutic modalities to best suit your particular needs, but I often find it helpful to work from within a Narrative, Solution-Focused, Strengths-Based, and Collaborative lens. This means that I think about people’s lives as stories: the story we tell ourselves about ourselves and others, based on our thoughts and emotions, powerfully shapes our behaviors, experiences, and quality of life. I will empower you to cultivate a sense of personal wellbeing and balance, fostering healing while also focusing on solutions rather than problems.
I enjoy working with individuals (18+), couples, and families, and I specialize in helping people navigate grief and loss (especially due to the death of a parent, a cancer diagnosis, or family estrangement), depression (feelings of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection from others) anxiety (high achieving individuals, social anxiety, health anxiety), breakups, relationship and family conflict, self-worth and sense of self, and professional identity (career counseling for college students, young adults, and older adults). I am also passionate about helping those suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder (and those who love them).
I earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Emory University, a master’s degree in Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology from the University of West Georgia, and a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Valdosta State University. After college, I lived and worked at a yoga and meditation center. This experience, along with my background in humanistic and transpersonal psychology, has prepared me well to offer and integrate spiritual exploration and mindfulness practice into sessions, for clients who are drawn to this work.
I see individuals, couples, and families under the direction of Meg McLeroy, LMFT and the supervision of Laura Knox-Furfari, LMFT.
