Amy Smith-Barnes, PsyD
Office Location: Atlanta
Taking a direct, yet kind and caring approach, I enjoy working with individuals through a frame of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, CBT, Positive Psychology, and Mindfulness.
I have been practicing in Atlanta since 1998. As part of the specialty team at The Atlanta Center for Eating Disorders, I assessed and treated women and men suffering from eating disorders and accompanying issues for more than 12 years. In 2009, I co-founded Midtown Psychotherapy Associates where I continue to treat clients presenting with eating disorders or eating concerns, anxiety, depression, trauma, and transitional or adjustment issues.
I enjoy working with patients who are in the beginning stages of addressing eating problems as well as those who seek aftercare following intensive treatment. The types of eating disorders I treat include Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder, ARFID, emotional eating, food Neophobia (fear of new foods), and other general eating problems. I enjoy working to strengthen one’s relationship with food and with self.
Other areas of interest include raising resilient children in a challenging culture, the highly sensitive temperament, and abortion decision-making and recovery. I am also trained in EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), a groundbreaking and extensively researched treatment for trauma and for moving past a stuck place in therapy. Finally, I have worked with many professionals in medicine, law, mental health, and entertainment who need more discreet care.
