Workshop Description

Dr. Angela Carlson Schaffner presents multiple considerations for providing trauma-informed care for clients, beginning with the intake assessment and throughout the course of therapy. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of types of trauma, the neurobiology of trauma, and interventions designed to provide trauma-informed care to clients. This workshop focuses on trauma-informed care in diverse populations, including a description of specific practices relevant to faith communities, and keeping children and vulnerable adults safe in those communities.

Objectives / Participants Will Be Able To:

  1. Describe the components of trauma-informed psychotherapy

  2. Explain types of trauma and quick assessment tools

  3. Summarize the therapeutic relationship through a trauma-informed lens

  4. Convey the research supporting the use of trauma-informed interventions

  5. Cite case examples that highlighted the need for cultural self-awareness and humility as an aspect of trauma-informed care

  6. Demonstrate 3 trauma-informed interventions

  7. Engage in an experiential self-awareness exercise for participants

DEI Statement

The workshop focuses on trauma-informed care in diverse populations, including a description of specific practices relevant to faith communities and keeping children and vulnerable adults safe in these communities (presenter's book chapter). A focus on LGBTQIA+ folks’ vulnerabilities and how to provide trauma-informed care in specific ways will also be covered. All topics are discussed using language that encourages inclusion and valuing of differences and awareness of the role of privilege and power dynamics in the therapy room.

Bio for Dr. Angela Carlson Schaffner

Dr. Angela Carlson Schaffner is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia, practicing since 2005, specializing in eating disorder treatment, trauma-informed care, and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. She sees couples and individuals, integrating approaches such as AEDP (somatic and relational therapies) and Internal Family Systems. She is trained in taekwondo as a third-degree black belt and leads therapy groups and workshops that integrate martial arts. Angela is the author of two books integrating psychology and faith, and she contributed to a resource for teaching trauma-informed practices to leaders of faith communities.
